An Eye for an Eye
How can we to live in this world and still love our enemies? For me, it’s by knowing these four things.
First, when we trust, let us trust in the Lord.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your pathsstraight. Proverbs 3:5-6
If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.
To slap someone was done to shame and disrespect the person. So when I am disrespected I remember, Jesus was mocked, spit on, stripped, beaten, and crucified, but it didn’t change who He was. Jesus was and still is the Son of God. The shame and disrespect done to Him was not His own. And no amount of disrespect can change who we are in Christ. With this knowledge, we can choose to turn the other cheek.
And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well.
Our clothes are an outward symbol of who we are. If somebody wants to sue (take from) you, they do so because they believe they are entitled to what you have. An evil person may do this by trying to improve their own reputation by taking from yours.
The Pharisees accused Jesus of being demon possessed.
But we remember, who we are is found in Christ and no one can take that from us.
I delight greatly in the LORD; my soul rejoices in my God. For he has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of his righteousness, as a bridegroom adorns his head like a priest, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. Isaiah 61:10
If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles.
Evil people are good at taking us for a ride. We can end up in some really dark places. But in Chirst, we know all roads are leading us home.
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33
Evil people have fallen for the lies of this world. (Just like we all do at times.)
We are called to love our enemies, and we can do this when we…
Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. Col 3:2-3
Eye for Eye
38“You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’h 39But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.40And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well. 41If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. 42Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you. Matt 5:38-42
