A Surgeon at Sushruta Trauma Centre in Delhi operated upon the leg of a patient admitted with a head injury.
As a result of an accident, Vijender Tyagi, the patient, had suffered many injuries on his head and face and was admitted to the hospital for surgery.
The surgeon confused him with another patient by the same name who was admitted with a fractured leg.
Patient’s son Ankit Tyagi said, “The surgeon drilled a small hole into my father’s right leg to put a pin. It was done under anesthesia so he didn’t even realize the mistake or raise an alarm”. It was he who spotted the error and notified the hospital.
The Superintendent of the hospital told that a committee was constituted to look into the matter and a disciplinary action was initiated against the doctor. “The doctor has been barred from conducting surgeries without supervision with immediate effect”, said Dr. Bahl.
“My father still has headache and pain in the chest where there is injury. But, due to the needless procedure, he is now unable to walk”, added Ankit.
It is not the first time that such case of gross negligence on the part of Doctors has come up. There have been many cases in the past. Recently, Doctors have proved their carelessness quite a few times. Are they so inexperienced? Or are they just careless towards their patients? Don’t they realize or re-confirm what a patient is suffering from? How can one operate someone’s leg when that particular person is suffering from head injuries?
