Mind Your Karmas

In Mahabharata,Bhishma Pitamah was lying on the bed of arrows. He had to lie straight on sharp-pointed arrows for many days, because if he moved the arrows will pierce him and will lead to profuse bleeding.Everyone on the battlefield came to meet him and so did Lord Krishna. One  day when Lord visited him, Bhishma Pitamah started smiling and said,“Lord you are aware of everything;the past, present and the future,so please tell me which wrong karma did I indulge in, in the past ,that I am receiving such a severe punishment.’’ Krishna said , “Pitamah, you yourself possess the power to see your past life ,so revisit your past life and you will know the answer.’’
Pitamah said Lord , “While I am lying,I am into constant deliberation and have seen that in my past 100 lives, I have not indulged in a single wrong act which could have led to this situation.’’

Krishna said, go back  one more year  and you will get your answer. Bhishma Pitamah concentrated and saw that 101 year back ,when he was a king, one day while he was travelling with his soldiers when suddenly a soldier came and said, ” King there is a snake on the way and if the whole contingent went over it ,it will get killed.’’ The king ordered that the snake should be safely picked up with the help of a stick and thrown away in the bushes, so that it does not gets crushed. The soldier followed the instructions, but unfortunately  the snake got entangled in the thorny bushes and the more it tried to escape ,the more it got stuck in it and ultimately the thorns pricked it and pierced its complete body .The snake started bleeding profusely and finally died.

Pitamah was astonished. He looked at the Lord and said, “Lord, but you know my act was unintentional and on the contrary was done to save the snake ,then why am I getting such a severe punishment in return.’’To this Krishna replied that , “whether the act was intentional or unintentional but it resulted in the death of the snake and hence had to be paid back.As per the celestial rules, whatever acts we do, we have to bear its results .Krishna said, “Pitamah in your case the uncountable good deeds you did overpowered this one bad deed and thus its result got delayed but ultimately the result had to be borne.’

Any act, whether good or bad will surely bear fruits, whether in this or in any other life ,so we should be always careful while doing all our karmas. We should not be self centered and should try to see beyond ourselves. Whatever we do, we should see that our acts do not hurt or affect anybody. Though we might not have any control on some of our acts and they may be unintentional but we should still try to be as good and considerate as possible. Whatever is in our hand, we should make sure that none of our acts leads to anyone’s agony. We should have full control on our speech as well as on our actions so that we do not become the cause of anybody’s distress.

Always remember that if a great human being like Bhishma Pitamah could not escape the results of his past karmas, then how can we even think of it.
