The question “What is human nature” is so important that some scientists and philosophers have spent their whole life on researching the complexity of human nature and even held the view point that all the philosophies are nothing more than an attempt to explain the human being. Scientists every day are faced with new challenges of human problems. This mystery will keep on going with new issues every time, still being researched till date. Actually, human nature refers to a set of inherent characteristics which all humans share. As every individual is born with an inclination towards goodness, a natural state that has been implanted in every soul by God.
It became the important aspect to understand the human nature, and making efforts to identify the core characteristics of man from ancient times. However in the present era, human nature has been given immensely high regard and is realised by educated society that neither material resources nor potential technologies can create victory, but the human-force that operates from behind. Nowadays, it has become the priority and policy of the company to invest high-amount into their Human Resource sector, realising the true value of ‘Human’ which is a healthy sign. Human beings have such a great potential that can change the world and make the difference.
Man is a distinct and unique creation of God. Only his Creator can reveal the reality of his being in the best and better way. He alone can clarify the human psychology clearly and completely. He can only provide right directions for a successful life. Just as operating machine becomes easy when catalogue is available with it. Same way, we are like a complex machine that needs a proper guide to operate. God has appointed Prophets to convey His message. They received revelations from the Creator and clarified and guided people as per the instructions.
God says in Holy Quran in – “And We have certainly honored the children of Adam and carried them on the land and sea and provided for them of the good things and preferred them over much of what We have created, with [definite] preference. (Chapter 17, Surah Al-Isra and verse 70)
“We have certainly created man in the best of stature;” (Chapter 95, Surah At-Tin and verse 4)
And according to the divine revelations, the Creator considers human-beings as the best creation among all other of His creations. Besides just a fine creation, God states that humans are bestowed with an in-built quality to judge between right and wrong – God says in the Holy Quran in Chapter 91, Surah Ash-Shams and verse 8 “Then He showed him what is wrong for him and what is right for him;”
Human beings are believed to be innately good. Every individual is born with an inclination towards goodness, a natural state that has been implanted in every soul by Allah. Children are thus born sinless, it is the environment and its influence on them that directs them to a particular pathway – Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said, “Every child is born in a pure state of nature (fitra).” Hence, man must not run-away from his original state of naturality –
Human nature is a combination of strengths and weaknesses; both of these are present in every individual as a form of test. The strength which a human-psychology possess can vary from practicing ‘sense of sacrifice’, ‘anger control,’ ‘forgiveness’ ‘patience’ and a lot more. A man can raise high and higher as a result of his strengths.
At the same time, he has got weaknesses too.
Allah says in Quran “Beautified for people is the love of that which they desire – of women and sons, heaper-up sums of gold and silver, fine branded horses, and cattle and tilled land. That is the enjoyment of worldly life, but Allah has with Him the best return. (Chapter 3, Surah Al-Imran and verse 14)
Man is at times in haste or gets disturbed easily; turns reactionary, forgets matters or starts blaming situations for fate and the list may continue. These weaknesses many at times over power the strengths, but the need is vice-versa. In accordance to the human nature; with which each one is born, man needs to strive to reach his natural-self (fitra) which is nothing but pure goodness and strengths. The strengths must influence the weakness and wipe them out. They must grow high and higher everyday with weakness diminishing with constant efforts. This is only possible when one gains the right knowledge along with its wisdom and understanding. This must be followed with continuous efforts in purification of heart and soul – Allah says in Holy Quran in Chapter 91, Surah Ash-Shams and verse 9 and 10 – “Indeed he succeeds who purifies his ownself (i.e. obeys and performs all that Allah ordered, by following the true Faith of Islamic Monotheism and by doing righteous good deeds).
And indeed he fails who corrupts his ownself (i.e. disobeys what Allah has ordered by rejecting the true Faith of Islamic Monotheism or by following polytheism, etc. or by doing every kind of evil wicked deeds).” Another form of strengthening the ‘strengths’ is to develop the relationship with the Creator, through various forms of worship; obligatory and voluntary prayers, increased remembrance of Allah and hearted supplications. Finally, setting up priorities determines the selection of strengths and weaknesses; if one prefers the everlasting life and reward in comparison to this temporary world, his ‘strengths’ are bound to increase. If one fails to set the right priority and falls for this illusionary world, he is destined to go against his nature, which is nothing but utter misery.
