Martyr : a poem

Happy and sad, angry and mad
I have gone through all
The promise you broke
When they lost all hope
I have gone through all
You fought in the war
While I fought with myself
When your ashes came
You never looked so tame
I wanted to laugh
But cried in pain
I have gone through all
Your parents have cried
Your sister cried too
You left us all
We waited for you
The flag on your body
Ruffled in wind
As I cried for the man
Who left everything.

This poem rings of truth. The sadness/anger is what we do when we lose someone so young. I hope your grief has lessened.

I served in Vietnam. My wife’s brother was killed in the Tet offensive of ’68. His casket was closed when we buried him on a Virginia hillside. I can imagine what it was like for my wife when I left for Vietnam that Christmas. My brother and I came back without a scratch. We were blessed.
