Republic Day – 26th January 2018

On this day, in the year 1950, the constitution of India came into effect, thus replacing the Government of India Act (1935). Although, the constitution of India was adopted on the 26th of November, 1949, but it was on the 26th of January 1950 that it officially came into effect, thus making India a democratic country.
It was because of its historic importance that 26th January was chosen, as it was on this day in the year 1930 when the Indian National congress proclaimed the declaration of Complete Independence or Poorna Swaraj.
It was by the efforts of 308 members of the constituent assembly, headed by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, that the constitution of India was drafted over a period of more than 2 years, from the 28th of August, 1947 to 26th of November, 1949.
This day is celebrated with great enthusiasm throughout the nation, especially in the capital, Delhi. Ceremonious parades are held at Rajpath in the presence of the President of India. Many high officials from various nations also adorn the occasion with their presence and witness the performances, which in a way pay tribute to the cultural heritage of India.
This year, as India celebrates its 69th Republic Day, the leaders from all the 10 ASEAN countries will be the chief guests at the ceremonial parade. There will be a total of 23 tableaux at the Republic Day parade, with participation of 13 States/union Territories and 9 Central Ministries.
Also, this year’s parade will not just have participants from the India Army, Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force, but there will be over 700 students from across nations who will perform at the event.
113 women from the Border Security Force or BSF will also be seen performing stunts on motorcycles.
